Came across this article via a link on Talkers.com and it made me think of the situation in Milwaukee with 3 full-time sports talk stations, a Spanish one, and one with Play-By-Play and part-time sports talk (WTMJ).

Found this quote from the PD of the now-only sports talker in St. Louis interesting:

“In the sports genre, having a big FM signal in today’s world is vital for success,’’ he said this week. “Then the format can’t be done on the cheap, you have to invest in it. From that respect, I feel good about what we do and I still think we have a ways to go.’’

It can't be done on the cheap? Well, I'd say WAUK, WSSP, and (especially) WOKY are done about as cheap as possible. Especially WOKY which has some of the worst, most generic imaging I've ever heard from a station.

I know you can't fully compare and contrast the two markets but I just thought it was kind of interesting.

I wonder how much longer we'll have three full-time sports talkers all rabidly competing for the same smaller and smaller piece of advertising revenue pie before one or two of them flip to some other kind of talk format?

Will Journal get in the game and flip 94.5 The Lake to a sports-talk format that simulcasts Packers/Brewers/Badgers/Bucks with WTMJ?
