They've had one as long as I can remember. I don't listen much, so I'm not sure if it has changed or not, but it always sounded more like a dong. You would barely notice it if you were not paying attention. Probably played with an instrument.

The late great WMAQ in Chicago had a more obvious tone at the top of the hour. It kept running for a few days after WSCR launched on the frequency.
