There was an article on Slate.com over the weekend that I think nailed it.

Basically, as soon as you hear about a major news event, turn off your TV. Shut off your phone. Go for a walk. Read a book. Clean your gutters. Then the next morning, wake up, read the story in the newspaper or favorite news site. You will be just as informed as everybody else, but you will have skipped the BS and useless/baseless information that poured out.
