This statement gets said a lot about syndicated programming. Yet, shows like Bob and Tom dominate ratings. Pandora usage is rampant, yet it's not local.

The takeaway? Nobody in 2013 gives a shit where the programming comes from, as long as it's relevant to them. If you can be relevant and local, then you've nailed it. But it's not essential.

And it's not just about the ratings. Adding "premium choice" programming is cheap. So your overhead is less, and even if you slip to second or third place in the ratings, as long as the revenue stays consistent the cash flow remains strong. So, to the GMs and the owners, who gives a shit.

Radio is a business, first and foremost. Always has been.
